How to Keep Spiders from Making a Massive Colony under Your Bed

For some people, finding a spider crawling on them in bed is terrifying and once in a while, it can even turn dangerous and deadly. Spiders cannot hurt you in the way that insects with stingers might, but their bites can become dangerous if they happen to be poisonous. Their venomous bites will likely only harm you in the same way that any other bug would: leave a welt and possibly even cause an allergic reaction. But when spiders begin to take up residence under your bed, there’s no such comfort.

You don’t need a professional exterminator or any kind of dangerous chemicals that you might not be able to handle yourself. While you could try these methods if they sound better to you, we recommend using all-natural ingredients 100% of the time because we want people to know exactly what is going on in their skin and into their homes without risk of harmful side effects.

You can use:

Lavender Oil:

This method works very well for killing spiders, but make sure you are getting pure lavender oil. Many products will say “lavender” but actually contain other oils which are much less effective at spider extermination!

Cedar Oil:

Cedar oil also has a chance of working pretty effectively, but you need to make sure that it doesn’t have any scents or chemicals mixed in with it. The purer the cedar oil is the better.

Peppermint Oil:

Peppermint oil might kill some spiders if they come into contact with enough of it, but this method isn’t recommended as highly as lavender and cedar because peppermint can become too strong for your home. If you want to try using peppermint oil anyway, place 4-5 drops on cotton balls around your room before going to sleep at night.

Lavender Spray:

You will need a spray bottle for this one which is why we aren’t recommending it as highly as lavender oil. The smell of lavender can be too powerful for some people, but you should spray this in your room every night before going to bed.

Cedar Spray:

As with the lavender spray, this one might also have a strong smell that could bother you or other people living in your home, so use it sparingly if at all. Fill your spray bottle almost completely full with cedar oil and fill up the rest of the way with water. Shake well before using once per week to get rid of any spiders in your home.

Peppermint Spray:

Peppermint spray might actually work better than cedar for getting rid of spiders because peppermint is much more potent than either cedar or lavender oils. Fill up your spray bottle with peppermint oil and water. Spray around the inside of your home every other day or so to keep spiders away.

Cedar Balls:

Mix cedar shavings in a cotton ball until it’s completely filled. Place these in corners, under furniture, or anywhere that you think has a chance of hidden spider eggs or live spiders hiding out at night when they’re active. Replace every week if necessary because the cedar will eventually lose its effectiveness over time.

Lavender Bags:

Make sure you get lavender flowers for this one without any stems because the stem is much less effective than the flower itself. Fill up an organic cotton bag with dried lavender flowers and place it underneath your bed where you won’t see it. Leave the bag there for 2 weeks or until you start to notice that spiders aren’t hanging around anymore. The smell of dried flowers will eventually become too strong if you keep the bag there any longer than this, making it work less effectively – so make sure to replace your lavender bags every couple of weeks or so!

Peppermint Bags:

Same as with the lavender bags except using peppermint leaves instead of lavender flowers. Fill an organic cotton bag about halfway up with dried peppermint leaves and place it underneath your bed where nobody will see them. Leave the bag under your bed for at least one week before replacing it because it can lose its effectiveness after that amount of time has passed.

Tea Tree Spray:

Fill up your spray bottle with water and add 5-10 drops of tea tree oil. Shake well before using once per week to destroy any spider eggs you might have in your home. Tea tree is not as effective as lavender or cedar, but will usually kill spiders that come into contact with it so is worth a shot if you want to try something different!

Lavender Essential Oil:

You can use an essential oil diffuser to spread the smell of lavender throughout your room every night before bed. This method works best for people who love the smell of lavender, but there are other alternatives listed above that work just as well even if they don’t have such a pleasant aroma! You should also spray a small amount of lavender essential oil around your room every other day or so if you don’t have an essential oil diffuser.

Conclusion:

The best spider repellents are those containing both lavender oil and peppermint or cedar. These substances can be found as either essential oils (organic) or as sprays (DIY). Give some of these recipes a try and see which works the best for you! We recommend mixing and matching methods to get rid of spiders from your home. For example, we think that placing lots of cedar balls under furniture is more effective than using cedar shavings in organic cotton ball because spiders would rather live anywhere other than inside a cotton ball! Also, leaving out several different types of spray bottles filled with various homemade repellents around your home might help keep spiders away for good.
