Early History:

The early history of Toronto began with an agreement between John Graves Simcoe and the Mississauga Nation on August 27th 1793 which saw Simcoe purchase 250,000 acres of land on behalf of Britain’s King George III. This land later became known as York and served as the capital of Upper Canada from 1793 to 1813.

In 1834, York was incorporated as a city and rename Toronto. At this time, it had a population of about 9,250 people and was home to a variety of industries such as shipbuilding, lumbering and brewing. The city continued to experience rapid growth in the 19th century with increased immigration from Europe. By 1901, Toronto had grown to become the fourth largest city in North America with more than 200,000 residents.

20th Century:

The 20th century saw an increase in industrial development in Toronto which further fuelled its growth. In 1954, the first subway line opened in Toronto making it the first metropolitan area in Canada to have a subway system. During the 1960s, Toronto experienced a wave of immigrants from all over the world and this influx of diversity helped shape the city into what it is today.

In 1998, Toronto was amalgamate with five surrounding municipalities to form one megacity call “the City of Toronto.” This merger allowed for a more unified administration and improved services for citizens. The 21st century has seen continued growth and development in Toronto’s as the city continues to attract new settlers from around the globe. It is now home to more than 2.6 million people and is consider one of the most livable cities in North America.
