Women’s Right in the 21st Century-Texas Abortion Ban

The United States of America is the idol country for the developed and developing nations around the world. It is one of the liberal countries and where we expect men and women to get equal rights. Currently, the new law in Texas that bans abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy is a point to question. Whether America is ready to give women their equal rights or is it still a long run for women.

What is Texas Abortion Law?

According to Flair Magazine for women, on 1st September 2021, a bill was signed into law by the Governor of Texas Greg Abbot banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. It bans abortion as soon as any cardiac activity is detected. The bill came into effect in September after the Supreme Court decides not to block it.

Other states in the United States of America try to imitate Texas but they are block by the judiciary time and again along with protests from various abortion rights activists and groups. The law is sometimes referred to as Senate Bill 8. Recently the law is under critical public scrutiny. As the law enables private-public or citizens to sue people that help in abortion including people who give financial aid to such women or who even gave them a ride to the clinic. People who bring such suits do not have to show any ties with the person they are suing. The law has no exceptions including cases of rape and incest.

It is because of the draconian nature of the said law that people across the state are protesting against it. Many demonstrators have circled the street of the Supreme Court yelling “My Body, My Choice” along with the drum beats, thus showing actively their unhappiness about the stringent Act.

In what way Texas abortion law is different from the efforts of other states

Texas law of Abortion differs from other states law in a way those other states of America require government officials to enforce the law. In Texas, the law enables private citizensto bring lawsuits to people aiding women in illegal abortion.

Texas abortion law in practice: Current Scenario

In this law, any person who sues the abortion provider could get the award of $ 10,000 at least. To prepare for such situations Texas has set up a website called ‘whistle-blower’. On this website, people can anonymously tip about anyone violating the rule of law. John Seago along with Texas’s Right to life cell explains that the civil lawsuits that we discussed earlier are not about women but are against people who make money from an illegal abortion.

Various lawsuits are pending in the court of law in the Texas abortion law matter against groups that are anti-abortion in nature. Currently, multiple abortion rights cells actively participate in the protest and oppose this draconian law.

Parties most injured by this law

As per the statistical data, there are almost 7 million women who are at the age of bearing children in the state of Texas. It’s these women who will suffer badly because of such stringent laws as the anti-abortion law will make it difficult for women to get an abortion in the state. There are all sectors of women who will suffer badly especially the vulnerable section that does not know much about their rights and who do not have the means to help them with.

The law creates an obstacle for every generation of women such as teenagers. Because of the small window of time between the conception and 6 weeks, teenagers won’t be able to abort the fetus because in most cases they don’t realize that they are pregnant. Most women realize they are pregnant only after 6 weeks. Then some women have low income or they may be immigrants without any legal status or awoman of color. Every sector of women is in perilous condition because of such steps by the state.

There are other problems as well such as the state of Texas requires minors to obtain permission from the legal guardian or parent if they want to have access to abortion care facilities. Some minors go to court because of certain problems thus delaying their abortion but the new law does not have any exception making the problem more problematic to deal with.

Conclusion

To help women who belong to the state of Texas there are so many people protesting and marching in various states of America so that they could get their right to abort. Women from all over the country are in support and are trying to be there for women who can’t support themselves. In such protests and rallies we can see slogans like “Mind Your Own Uterus”, “Mother by Choice”, and “Abortion is a personal choice and not a legal debate”.
